NORTHERN ITALY OR LOWER GERMANY, 15TH CENTURY ENTHRONED MADONNA Carved and polychrome wooden sculpture. Dimensions: 70 x 28 x 18 cm. The Virgin is depicted in full face, seated on a simple throne, with her hands outstretched and her head covered by her mantle. Traces of the original polychromy in shades of red, green, and ochre remain. The solemn composition and the simplification of the forms are reminiscent of late-Gothic sculpture from Northern Europe, spanning from Alpine Italy to the Germanic region.
