15TH-CENTURY FRENCH SCULPTOR SAINT CATHERINE OF ALEXANDRIA Polychrome and gilded wood, 35 x 11 cm. Defects, missing parts. Mounted on a base covered in blue velvet. The saint is depicted subduing Emperor Maxentius, who, after having his marriage proposal rejected, ordered her martyrdom—a motif particularly common in France and Flanders. The work exhibits late Gothic stylistic characteristics, evident in the elegant drapery of the garments—marked by deep, broken folds—in the soft and delicate modeling, and in the pronounced contouring of the figure, which takes on a sinuous and refined form. The refined formal elegance, the elongated proportions, and the flowing rhythm of the drapery evoke the language of the International Gothic style, which was particularly enduring in Franco-Flemish figurative art.
