RUSSIAN SCHOOL, LATE 18TH CENTURY SAINT JOHN THE BAPTIST Central Russia, late 18th century Egg tempera on wood, 31.5 × 36.5 cm This refined icon, attributable to late 18th-century Central Russian art, depicts Saint John the Baptist, the Forerunner of Christ, the last of the prophets, and a figure of fundamental importance in the spiritual and liturgical tradition of the Orthodox Church. The work stands out for its pictorial style, which combines the solemnity of the Byzantine iconographic tradition with a typically Russian expressive sensibility, characterized by intense emotional engagement and a subtle search for humanity in the representation of the sacred. The saint is depicted with his customary iconographic attributes, clad in a fur tunic—symbolizing his ascetic life in the desert—and an olive-green cloak. His face, stern and pensive, is framed by a thick beard and unkempt hair, rendered through stylized locks that lend the figure a marked spiritual character. Particularly significant is the rendering of his expression, in which prophetic rigor is accompanied by a profound inner gentleness, evoking that dimension of moving tenderness—close to the sentiment of humility—which constitutes one of the most evocative aspects of Russian religious sensibility. The composition reveals an adherence to a transitional stylistic language, in which fidelity to traditional models is enriched by a greater attention to the character’s physical and psychological portrayal. The restrained color palette, dominated by earthy tones and the green of the cloak, helps to emphasize the austere and contemplative character of the image. The icon stands as a significant testament to late 18th-century Russian devotional painting, an expression of a figurative culture capable of preserving the symbolic power of the Orthodox tradition while imbuing it with a particular emotional intensity.
