RUSSIAN SCHOOL, 19TH CENTURY THE TRANSFIGURATION Egg tempera on wood, 31x26 cm An elegant 19th-century Russian icon depicting the Transfiguration of Christ, one of the most significant episodes in the Gospel tradition and one of the Twelve Great Feasts of the Orthodox liturgy. The composition follows the traditional Byzantine iconographic scheme, with Christ at the center, enveloped in divine light and flanked by Moses and Elijah, while in the lower register the three apostles Peter, James, and John are depicted overwhelmed by the splendor of the vision. Of particular significance is the symbolism of light, an expression of divine glory and a foreshadowing of the Resurrection. The work stands out for its compositional balance, chromatic harmony, and evocative spiritual intensity—characteristics inherent to the refined Russian iconographic tradition.
