RUSSIAN SCHOOL, VOLGA REGION, 19TH CENTURY EXALTATION OF THE HOLY CROSS Egg tempera on wood, 36x31 cm The icon depicts the solemn Exaltation of the True Cross in Jerusalem, according to the tradition following its discovery by Saint Helena. At the center of the composition, Patriarch Macarius raises the Cross, assisted by two deacons, in the presence of Emperors Constantine and Helena and a crowd gathered in prayer. The scene is framed by monumental symbolic architecture, evocative of the Church of the Holy Sepulcher. The rigorous compositional symmetry, the solemnity of the figures, and the centrality of the Cross lend the image an intense liturgical and theological significance. The work, attributable to 19th-century Russian iconography from the Volga region, stands out for its narrative clarity and monumental balance, in full continuity with the Byzantine tradition.
