Jacques Callot (1592–1635) — Il Capitano, or L’Innamorato, from Les Trois Pantalons - 1618 Description: Il Capitano, or L’Innamorato, from Les Trois Pantalons (Three Italian Comedians / Les Trois Acteurs), c. 1618–1620. Etching with engraving. Lieure 289, only state; Meaume 628. One of Callot’s celebrated and much sought-after series of only three large-format prints devoted to characters of the Italian Commedia dell’Arte. These unusually large and imposing figure compositions occupy a distinctive place within Callot’s graphic oeuvre, contrasting a monumental theatrical character in the foreground with extraordinarily delicate and animated scenes of street theatre and numerous spectators in the distance. Here Il Capitano, or L’Innamorato, stands confidently before the viewer in an elegant plumed hat and fashionable costume, his sword at his side, while an extensive crowd attends a theatrical performance in the background. The series was executed during Callot’s Florentine period and may have been inspired by a performance of the Compagnia di Commedianti di Zani in Florence in November 1618. One of the complete series of three, offered in the present sale as three consecutive lots. Dimensions: 22,70 x 15,30 cm Condition: A very good, strong and well-contrasted impression on laid paper, with the principal figure printing with excellent clarity and depth and the exceptionally delicate background remarkably crisp and well defined. The sheet complete with small margins beyond the plate mark on three sides; only the broad blank lower margin reduced, without loss to the image. Some minor age-related surface soiling and handling traces, a few small stains and minor defects at the extreme sheet edges, including a closed tear at the upper right corner. A very attractive impression despite the condition issues, overall in fair condition. Literature: Lieure 289, only state; Meaume 628 Medium: Etching with engraving Date: 1618-1620
