Melchior Meier (active in Italy, c. 1572–1582) – The Resurrection, 1577 Description: Melchior Meier (active in Italy, c. 1572–1582) – The Resurrection, 1577. Christ rising triumphantly above the tomb, seated on clouds and holding the banner of the Resurrection, surrounded by a radiant aureole and numerous winged cherubim; below, the dramatically foreshortened soldiers guarding the tomb recoil and shield themselves from the apparition. A highly accomplished Mannerist engraving by the German-born Melchior Meier, who was active in Italy during the 1570s and early 1580s. The powerful, densely worked composition combines an Italianate monumentality with the exceptionally precise burin technique characteristic of Meier's very small engraved oeuvre. Dated 1577. Engraving. Hollstein 1; Passavant III, p. 475, no. 2. Only state. Dimensions: 18,70 x 12,20 cm Condition: Very good impression on laid paper, trimmed on the plate border, with traces of margins, watermarked (partial probably Italian circular watermark). Defects to the corners, with traces of old hinges on the verso. Overall in fair attractive condition.
