Anthonie Waterloo - Sheepshanks - c. 1640-1675 Description: This atmospheric etching depicts a picturesque thatched cottage and a tall, dominant tree on the banks of a flooded wetland, while in the distance, beyond an alluvial forest, stands a village church. It is a characteristic example of the seventeenth-century Dutch fascination with evocative landscapes, a tradition closely associated with artists such as Anthonie Waterloo and Jan Ruijscher. Ruijscher was among the most distinctive Dutch landscape artists of the mid-seventeenth century. His panoramic landscapes show affinities with the work of Rembrandt and his circle, while the influence of Hercules Segers was so pronounced that Ruijscher became known as the “Young Hercules.” The sheet is lettered “AW ex.”, identifying Anthonie Waterloo as the publisher. Waterloo, himself an accomplished painter, draughtsman and etcher of landscapes, in this case he acquired the original etching plate by Jan Ruijscher an reworked it to give it his own atmospheric feeling. These prints enjoyed lasting popularity, continuing until the nineteenth century.
