Cornelis Claesz. van Wieringen, Claes Jansz. Visscher - Landscape - 1613 Description: A picturesque landscape with a winding country road, where two pairs of figures are engaged in conversation. Steps at the side lead towards a small chapel, while windmills appear in the distance. Signed "CCW in." and "CIV f.".Design by Cornelis Claesz. van Wieringen the Haarlem marine painter and draughtsman associated with the artistic circle of Hendrick Goltzius. From the series of fourteen landscapes entitled 'Amaeniores Aliquot Regiunculae' (“Some Charming Country Districts”), published by David de Meyne in 1613. The series consists principally of river and coastal landscapes incorporating recognizably Dutch motifs. The compositions reveal the strong influence of the celebrated 'Master of the Small Landscapes', as also noted by David Freedberg. This connection is particularly significant in Visscher's work: only a year earlier he had republished the famous sixteenth-century landscape series 'Regiunculae et Villae Aliquot Ducatus Brabantiae', then attributed by Visscher to Pieter Bruegel. The present series continues this tradition while moving towards the more naturalistic representation of the native Dutch countryside that would become a defining feature of seventeenth-century Dutch landscape printmaking. One of the most charming little landscape etching from the period. The print onece belonged to a mid eighteenth century's collection. It has a handwritten collection mark G.C.W. and a collection number 85 with the date 1756 below. Dimensions: 13,90 x 19,00 cm Condition: Very good impression on laid paper from the period, with the full plate border and margins, narrow just outside the image borderline at right. On fools head watermarked paper with a small tear top middle right. Overall still good condition.
