Hendrick Goltzius, Jan Saenredam - Summer with Harvest - Ca. 1595 Description: Jan Saenredam engraved several sets of the four seasons. The most common is the series from 1605. Here we have a plate from a rare more earlier series made circa 1595. It shows Several farmers and farmwives are harvesting the grain. The farmwife in the foreground is tying the ears together. Phoebus Apollo rides past the sun in his chariot drawn by four horses. Below the image is a two-line Latin text providing an explanation of the scene: Through me, bountiful Ceres grows white, with dense ears of corn, and I bless the farmer with the fruits of a fertile year. Nice print designed by Goltzius in excellent condition. Dimensions: 20.50 x 14.27 cm Condition: Excellent impression on early watermarked laid paper with full plate border and good margins.
