Hendrick Goltzius (1558–1617) - Ecce Homo - 1597 Description: Hendrick Goltzius (1558–1617) – Ecce Homo, 1597, plate 8 from The Passion of Christ. Christ, crowned with thorns and holding the reed, is presented to the people from a balcony at upper left, while Pontius Pilate washes his hands beside him; below, a densely packed and animated crowd mocks and gestures towards Christ. Engraving, monogrammed and dated in the plate '1597 / HG' and numbered '8' at lower left. From Goltzius's celebrated series of twelve engravings of the Passion, executed between 1596 and 1598. In this remarkable series Goltzius deliberately adopted the manner of Lucas van Leyden, replacing his characteristic swelling line with the fine, even lines and long cross-hatchings associated with the great sixteenth-century master. The series ranks among Goltzius's most accomplished exercises in historical style and became extremely popular. References: Bartsch 34; New Hollstein 24; Hollstein 28; Hirschmann 28; Strauss 341.
