Augustin Braun, Abraham Hogenberg - Christ and the Angels with Instruments of Passion — Very Rare complete set (8) - c. 1608 Description: Abraham Hogenberg (c. 1578–1653), after Augustin Braun — Christ and the Seven Angels with the Instruments of the Passion — Complete series of eight engravings, c. 1608. A very rare complete series of eight engravings depicting Christ as the Fons Vitae followed by seven angels bearing the Instruments of the Passion (Arma Christi), with episodes from the Passion in the backgrounds. The first plate is lettered “Augustinus Braun invenit” and “Abraham Hogenberg sculpsit”; all eight plates are numbered 1–8 and bear six-line Latin verses by Guilhelm Salsman below the images. Of particular interest, Augustin Braun’s original preparatory drawing, dated 1608, for one of the engravings is preserved in the British Museum, London, where it is explicitly described as a study for an engraving by Abraham Hogenberg. Complete sets are preserved in the Rijksmuseum, Amsterdam (RP-P-2003-302–309) and the Herzog Anton Ulrich-Museum, Braunschweig, the latter formerly described as the only known complete set. Not present in the British Museum. Early edition. (A later edition was issued by the Nuremberg publisher Paul Fürst with three-line German texts replacing the original Latin verses.) Engravings, each approximately 165 × 106 mm. Reference: Thieme-Becker XVII, p. 308; not recorded in Hollstein, Le Blanc or Nagler ---- A complete set in good impression and good condition is rare! Dimensions: 16,30 x 10,60 cm each Condition: Excellent impression on laid paper from the period with a 'Strassbourg' watermark with a snake twisted around a stake, trimmed on the plate border. Sheet 3 and 7 with a wormhole. Overall a uniform set in very good condition. Literature: Thieme-Becker XVII, p. 308; not recorded in Hollstein, Le Blanc or Nagler --- Rare Medium: Engraving Date: 1608-1630
