Peter Paul Rubens - Temptation of Christ Description: This engraving overpainted in color shows in the left corner a design made by Rubens for the ceiling in the Jesuits Church in Antwerp that was destroyed by a fire in 1718 . Rubens made the preparatory drawing for Christoffel who made a famous woodcut from it (Hollstein 6).The landscape with the light effect coming from behind the gnarled tree trunk seems based on the design by Roelant Savery as engraved by Aegisus Sadeler (Hollstein 236). The author of the work in auction was not found by me. Dimensions: 32,00 x 27,00 cm Condition: The print has plate borders at left and on top but might be trimmed at right. Mounted on a collection sheet. A nice and interesting work for it's exquisite coloring. Medium: Engraving Date: Circa 17th Century
