Maarten de Vos, Johann Sadeler - The Resurrection of the Dead / “Carnis Resurrectionem - 1579 Description: Jan Sadeler I (1550–1600) after Maarten de Vos (1532–1603) – The Resurrection of the Dead / “Carnis Resurrectionem”. A magnificent and highly detailed engraving illustrating the Resurrection of the Flesh, one of the articles of the Apostles’ Creed. The composition is based upon Ezekiel's vision of the Valley of Dry Bones: the prophet stands dramatically at the center while, at God's command, the scattered bones surrounding him are progressively restored to life. At left skeletons and corpses rise from the earth, while at right the resurrected regain their flesh and gather as living men and women. Above, God the Father appears among the clouds, sending the breath of life over the valley. The extraordinary composition by Maarten de Vos transforms the biblical vision into an elaborate panorama of death and resurrection. Lettered above with the passage from Ezekiel 37, “Ossa arida, audite verbum Domini… Ecce ego intromittam in vos spiritum, et vivetis”, and below with quotations from Isaiah 26 and John 5 surrounding the central profession of faith “CARNIS RESURRECTIONEM”. Signed “M. de Vos invent.” and “Joan: Sadeler fecit et ex:”. Engraving by Jan Sadeler I after Maarten de Vos, published by Sadeler himself.s.
