Maarten de Vos, Johann Sadeler - The last judgement - 1579 Description: Jan Sadeler I (1550–1600) after Maarten de Vos (1532–1603) – The Last Judgement / The Second Coming of Christ. A depiction of the Last Judgment with two distinct worlds: the earthly and the heavenly. In the lower section, the Resurrection of the dead is shown emerging from the tomb; to the left, an angel assists a resurrected woman; to the right, a demon with goat's legs, male genitalia, and female breasts drags a man by his hair. In the background, in this earthly realm, the righteous are accompanied by angels on the left, while sinners are pushed by demons on the right. In the upper section, the resurrected Jesus is in the center, with the Virgin Mary and the apostles to his right, and Saint John and the other apostles to his left. In the middle section, separating the two worlds, are trumpeting angels. The monumental composition combines the Second Coming described in Matthew 24 with the resurrection and final judgement of mankind. Lettered above with the words from Matthew 24:30, “Et tunc plangent omnes tribus terrae: et videbunt Filium hominis venientem in nubibus coeli cum virtute multa et maiestate”, and below with further biblical quotations concerning the Last Judgement. "Inde venturus est iudicare vivos et mortuos” : “from thence He shall come to judge the living and the dead”. Signed in the plate “M. de Vos Inuent.” and “Io. Sadeler fecit.” Engraving by Jan Sadeler I after Maarten de Vos.
