Hans Vredeman de Vries, Gerard de Jode - Daniel Interpreting Nebuchadnezzar’s Dream, 1585. Description: Hans Vredeman de Vries (1527–c.1607), published by Gerard de Jode (1509–1591) – Daniel Interpreting Nebuchadnezzar’s Dream, 1585. Daniel stands before King Nebuchadnezzar and interprets the king’s prophetic dream, while courtiers and armed guards attend the scene. The narrative is set within a magnificent imaginary Renaissance palace interior, its elaborate architecture, perspective construction, sculptural decoration and distant views characteristic of the inventions of Hans Vredeman de Vries. Particularly remarkable are the numerous representations of pagan sculpture and mythological imagery incorporated into the palace decoration, contrasting with Daniel’s revelation of divine truth. Plate 2 from the series of six engravings illustrating the Story of Daniel, published by Gerard de Jode in his Thesaurus Sacrarum Historiarum Veteris Testamenti, Antwerp, 1585.
