167 - Hans Bol (1534-1593) - Landscape with The Fall of Icarus

Hans Bol (1534-1593) - Landscape with The Fall of Icarus Description: Flemish landscape after a design by Hans Bol, depicting the fall of Icarus as his waxen wings melt in the sun. Above him flies his father, Daedalus, looking on in despair. In the foreground, two shepherds point towards the scene while their flock grazes nearby. Beyond them, a farmer ploughs his field. The background is dominated by a broad river landscape with fortified banks and a castle on an island in the middle of the river. The composition is based on a drawing by Hans Bol, now in the collection of the Museum Mayer van den Bergh, Antwerp. The engraver is not indicated on the print but most likely one of the Sadeler's. The print can be dated to circa 1600. The Rijksmuseum suggests Aegidius Sadeler as the probable publisher, he might very well be the engraver also based on his similar work. Dimensions: 19,10 x 25,00 cm Condition: A good impression with subtle hand-coloring, on good thick laid paper with an oval watermark. The print is in an excellent condition with full plate borders and margins. Presented in an attractive passe-partout with gilt frame line. Literature: Rijksmuseum RP-P-1969-142 Medium: Engraving Date: 1600
