Jan van der Straet - The hunt of the Satyr - c.1596 Description: A group of men and women armed with long spears pursue a fleeing satyr in a fantastic Egyptian landscape near the Nile. The satyr, carrying his panpipes and turning dramatically towards his pursuers, runs towards a tree, while further figures advance across the mountainous landscape; a classical villa and fountain appear at upper right. This hunt of the satyr is plate 47 of 105 from the series; Hunts of Wild Animals, Birds, and Fish (Venationes Ferarum, Avium, Piscium) This print is invented by Jan van der Straet, sculpted by Jan Collaert II and published by Philips Galle around 1596, signed “Ioan. Stradanus invent. / Ioan. Collaert sculp. / Phls Galle excudit.”.' The plate is numbered 47 in margins left the corner, and tells the image story in Latyn. Dimensions: 19,80 x 26,50 cm Condition: Excellent impression on laid paper from the period, trimmed on the image borderline, watermarked (interlaced c's). Moderate time staining, verso clean. Overall in good condition.
