Lambert Lombard, Pieter van der Heyden – Saint Matthew the Evangelist – 1554 Description: Engraving after Lambert Lombard, from the series The Four Evangelists, published by Hieronymus Cock in Antwerp. Saint Matthew is seated on clouds, writing in a book held against his raised knee. A winged figure appears behind his shoulder, while a second, closed volume rests beside his foot. The winged man is Matthew’s traditional attribute; his presence also suggests the divine inspiration of the Gospel. The saint’s muscular torso and ample, flowing drapery give the composition a monumental character. With the engraver’s monogram lower right. Pieter van der Heyden, also known as Petrus a Merica, was one of the principal engravers of Pieter Bruegel the Elder’s designs. Dimensions: 19,80 x 14,40 cm Condition: Very good impression on thin laid paper, trimmed just inside the plate border. Without visible watermark. Collection stamp in the bottom left corner.
