Lambert Lombard, Pieter van der Heyden – Saint Luke the Evangelist – 1554 Description: Pieter van der Heyden, called Petrus a Merica (c. 1530–c. 1572). Engraving after a design by Lambert Lombard, published by Hieronymus Cock in Antwerp. Saint Luke sits among the clouds, writing in a book, with an ox at his side. The ox is his traditional symbol and identifies him as one of the four Evangelists. His monumental figure, loosely draped robes and the closely engraved sky give the small composition a striking sense of scale. From a series of four prints depicting the Evangelists. Pieter van der Heyden, also known as Petrus a Merica, was one of the principal engravers of Pieter Bruegel the Elder’s designs.
