Lucas van Leyden - St Philip - 1510 Description: St Philip; facing left, holding staff topped with a cross in right hand. Saint Paul was not one of the initial twelve but only later counted among the apostles. The figures are quite broad due to the heavy clothing in which the busy folds are noticeable and have relatively small heads. This points to an origin around 1510. The series bears the monogram of Lucas van Leyden but is not dated on the prints. Bartsch gives them as around 1511 and by the New Hollstein c.1510. Guaranteed original van Leyden prints from a 16th centuries edition. Dimensions: 11,40 x 7,20 cm Condition: A good early impression on thin laid paper from the period. Small defect bottom left corner. Overall good condition. Literature: New Hollstein (Dutch & Flemish) / The New Hollstein: Dutch and Flemish etchings, engravings and woodcuts 1450-1700 (95) ----- Bartsch / Le Peintre graveur (VII.389.95) Medium: Engraving Date: 1510
