Albrecht Durer, Marcantonio Raimondi - Life of the Virgin - 1505 Description: Christ taking leave from his mother. This is one of the famous engravings by Raimondi based on the series of woodcuts on the Life of the Virgin by Albrecht Dürer. Marcantonio Raimondi (1475- 1534) made engraved copies of them and was, as Vasari reports, selling them as originals in Venice in 1506. Dürer became furious and brought a complaint in Venice. This led to a famous early dispute over artistic ownership. According to Vasari, Raimondi was permitted to copy Dürer’s compositions but was prohibited from reproducing his monogram. This is a fine work of art showing Raimondi's great skill. From the collection of the Duke of Arenberg, his collection stamp on the backside.
