Leonhard Beck, Hans Burgkmair - The young Weisskunig learning Italian - C.1514-1516 Description: The young Weisskunig learning Italian from knights; Maximilian standing on the right, a group of five knights in armor on the left, on the wall behind them seats covered with cloth and windows with bull's eye panes, a doorway and part of a vaulted ceiling on the left, on the right behind Maximilian a sideboard with a covered goblet, and some fruit.. Woodcut from 'The White King'. Der Weisskunig or The White King was a chivalric novel and thinly disguised biography of the Holy Roman Emperor, Maximilian I, (1486–1519) written in German by Maximilian and his secretary between 1505 and 1516. Although not explicitly identified as such in the book, Maximilian appears as the "young" White King, with his father Frederick III represented as the "old" White King. The book is now mainly remembered for the 251 exquisite woodcut illustrations, made in Augsburg between 1514 and 1516, with Hans Burgkmair the Elder and Leonhard Beck as the main artists. In this one Maximilian was made by Hans Burgkmair the Elder, while the rest of the scene was done by Leonhard Beck (c.1480-1542) ----- This is an impression from the blocks when re-discovered in 1775.
