Hans Schauffelein - The Adoration of the Magi - 1514 Description: Hans Leonhard Schäufelein (c. 1480/85–1538/40) – The Adoration of the Magi, 1514. The Virgin seated at right holding the Christ Child, with Caspar kneeling in adoration at center, Melchior standing at left and Balthasar behind Caspar, set before architectural ruins and an extensive landscape beyond. Woodcut, signed with Schäufelein's monogram and characteristic shovel device on the base of the column at left, and additionally bearing the monogram 'HF' of the woodcutter. An original woodcut made for 'Das Plenarium oder Ewangely buoch', printed by Adam Petri in Basel in 1514. A fine example of Schäufelein's early woodcut production, strongly rooted in the tradition of Dürer's Nuremberg school. Schäufelein was strongly influenced by Albrecht Dürer, in whose studio in Nuremberg he worked from c. 1503. Dimensions: 19,80 x 12,90 cm Condition: Very good impression on laid paper from the period, trimmed on the image borderline, with good margins, watermarked with a crescent moon wit ha snake twisted around a stake above. A few unobtrusive pinholes. With the original German text on the backside. Overall in excellent condition. Literature: Bartsch VII.247.9; Hollstein 1054; Dodgson II.31.80. Medium: Woodcut Date: 1514
