Michael Wolgemut – Woman Taken in Adultery / Healing Miracles , 1491 - Two Woodcuts Description: Two woodcuts, one at each side, on one sheet. An impressive late fifteenth-century woodcut from Stephan Fridolin's Der Schatzbehalter oder Schrein der wahren Reichtümer des Heils und ewiger Seligkeit, published by Anton Koberger in Nuremberg in 1491, with illustrations designed by Michael Wolgemut and Wilhelm Pleydenwurff. The recto depicts Christ and the Woman Taken in Adultery (John 8:1–11), with Christ kneeling and writing on the tiled floor before the accused woman and her accusers, the Tablets of the Law prominently displayed in the background. The verso shows Christ's healing miracles, with the sick and infirm gathered before him. Both compositions are characteristic of the elaborate narrative woodcuts produced in Wolgemut's workshop, where the young Albrecht Dürer received his artistic training. A fine example printed on both sides of a single sheet from one of the most important illustrated incunabula of the fifteenth century.
