Michel Wolgemut (1434-1519) - Pius II and Emperor Frederick III - 1493 Description: One of the large full page woodcuts from the first German edition of Hartmann Schedel, "Liber Cronicarum", printed by Anton Koberger in Nuremberg in 1493. This is a scene shows Pope Pius II and the Emperor Frederick III seated on one throne with their attributes and dignitaries, and symbolizes the large ambition of the German edition of the Chronique. The wood blocks were designed by Michael Wolgemut and his stepson Wilhelm Pleydenwurff and their assistants, including the young Albrecht Dürer, who was apprenticed to Wolgemut at the time. The printing was carried out under the supervision of the great scholar-printer Anton Koberger, godfather of Dürer. Here a good printed sharp impression of the impressive woodcut showing the hand of a great master. Here we have a fine oldcoloured example of this impressive woodcut from the old colored luxury editions of the Cronicarum who were of the most expensive ones. Dimensions: 23,00 x 22,50 cm, sheet 41,50 x 29,20 cm Condition: Excellent impression on thick laid paper, with the full borderline, with wide margins. The wide margins a bit time stained but overall in a very good condition. Literature: Liber Chronicarum, here the firsrt German edition , printed by Anton Koberger in Nuremberg on 23 December 1493 . (The first Latin edition was published 12 July 1493). The luxury editions in old coloring are mentioned in literature and were of the most expensive. --- Adrian Wilson - 1976: The making of the Nuremberg Chronicle. Medium: Woodcut Date: 1493
