Pair of Brutalist candelabras; mid-20th century. Solid iron with a rusted finish. One-of-a-kind, handcrafted pieces. Measurements: 36 x 20 x 20 cm (x2). This pair of candelabras is a unique expression of Brutalist aesthetics applied to the decorative arts. Crafted from solid iron, both pieces stand out for the robustness of their material, the austerity of their forms, and a surface featuring ochre and brown tones that evoke the natural oxidation of the metal.Their design features a square base from which slender vertical stems emerge, topped by circular plates and cylindrical candle holders. The arrangement of these elements at different heights creates an interesting interplay of rhythms and proportions that is marked by hallmarks of contrast with the visual weight of the iron. One of the candelabras features five light points and the other four, creating an asymmetrical pair in which formal repetition coexists with variation. Brutalism emerged in the mid-20th century as a movement that championed the honesty of materials, formal simplicity, and the absence of superfluous ornamentation. Although primarily associated with architecture and the use of exposed concrete, its influence extended to the design of furniture and decorative objects, where iron, stone, and other raw materials took center stage.
