Coffee table from Vallauris, France, 1960s. Top made of enameled lava tiles and a black-lacquered metal frame. In good condition. Measurements: 22 x 80 x 45.5 cm. This coffee table is a product of the heyday of artistic ceramics in Vallauris during the 1950s and 1960s, when the French town became one of the leading centers of European ceramic experimentation. In this context, artists such as Roger Capron helped revitalize modern furniture by incorporating glazed surfaces of great artistic expressiveness. The piece stands out for its tabletop, decorated with an abstract composition of fragmented geometric shapes and glazes of intense chromatic richness. The vibrant reds, golden yellows, and deep blacks create hallmarks of contrast and textural effects reminiscent of the painterly explorations of mid-20th-century Informalism. The glossy ceramic surface is integrated into a metal frame with straight lines and a slender profile, whose functional character is a hallmark of its visual impact compared to the tabletop. The combination of ceramic craftsmanship and industrial design reflects one of the central concerns of postwar French furniture design, when traditional materials took on new expressive possibilities within modern interior design.
