KAZUO MOTOZAWA (Japan, 1945) for Staff Leutchten. Pair of “Saturno” lamps. Germany, 1972. Chrome-plated metal. In working condition. Exhibits wear consistent with age and use. Measurements: 30 x 30 cm (x2). Designed by Kazuo Motozawa for Staff Leuchten in 1972, this pair of “Saturn” lamps is a striking example of the futuristic aesthetic associated with the space age, one of the major sources of inspiration for lighting design in the 1970s. Their composition evokes the structure of the planet Saturn through a shade formed by overlapping rings of chrome-plated metal, topped by a circular cover with the same finish and articulated around a chrome-plated tube and other metal components. The reflective surface of the chrome accentuates its geometry and enhances the sculptural character of these light fixtures. The “Saturno” model was marketed in various versions, including a white table lamp variant. Within this same aesthetic family is the “Aureola” pendant lamp, which has a thicker profile and is shorter in length. Kazuo Motozawa was born in 1945 in Saitama, Japan, and graduated from Musashino Junior College in 1968. After completing his studies, he began designing lighting fixtures for Yamagiwa, and from 1977 to 1985, he directed the LD Yamagiwa Laboratory. In 1987, he founded HALO Design Laboratory, Inc. Throughout his career, he has presented his work at numerous exhibitions and received various awards in the field of design. Exhibits wear consistent with age and use.
