Attributed to GILBERT ROHDE (1894–1944). Set of three nesting side tables, 1940s. Glass, wood, and steel. They show slight signs of use. Measurements of the largest table: 41 × 40 × 40 cm. Longest side of the tabletop: 76 cm. The set of three nested side tables now up for auction stands out for its formal elegance, visual lightness, and versatility. Each piece features a transparent glass top with a triangular shape, gently rounded corners, and polished edges, allowing them to be nested together or arranged independently to create dynamic geometric compositions. Their most distinctive feature lies in their meticulous craftsmanship and the design of their supports: three slender wooden legs with a truncated cone shape in a black finish that are attached to the glass via cylindrical exposed steel fittings, culminating at the base in small spherical feet—also made of steel—that provide stability and refined hallmarks in materials. The design reflects the transition from late Art Deco to mid-century modernism, a period in which asymmetrical forms and the combination of fine and industrial materials took center stage. The design is attributed to the American Gilbert Rohde, a pioneer of modern industrial design in North America during the 1930s and 1940s, recognized for introducing clean lines, organic forms, and a versatile and functional approach to contemporary home furnishings. Its condition faithfully reflects its age, showing minimal signs of wear while maintaining an impeccable finish in the transparency of the glass, the wood, and the metal trim. Since the complete set of three pieces is preserved in such excellent condition, it is a rare find on the market.
