Pop Art Cabinet, ca. 1960. Partially polychrome Iroko wood. Measurements: 190 x 138 x 42 cm. A mid-20th-century design cabinet, crafted from iroko wood and partially polychromed. The piece features an upper section whose front surface is adorned with a striking geometric zigzag or chevron pattern, composed of blocks of green, gray, yellow, blue, red, and orange. The alternating shades and repetition of shapes create a dynamic visual rhythm that transforms the piece into a graphic composition of great expressive power. The contrast between the warmth and richness of the wood and the intensity of the polychromatic design gives the piece a unique personality. The geometric motif breaks with the usual restraint of functional furniture and transforms the cabinet’s surface into a field for chromatic experimentation, closely aligned with the languages of geometric abstraction and the aesthetic that would develop around Pop Art during the 1960s. In the context of mid-20th-century furniture design, this piece reflects the growing interest in incorporating color and geometry as central elements of the domestic space. During the 1950s and 1960s, the renewal of the decorative arts fostered an increasingly close dialogue between furniture, painting, and graphic design, with geometric compositions and chromatic hallmarks that challenged the austerity of traditional functionalism.
