ALFREDO ARRIBAS (Barcelona, 1954) for Carlos Jané. Postmodern design chair, 1980s. Wood with a black fabric cover on the backrest. In good condition, with slight scuffs on the wood. This is a one-of-a-kind prototype of the original design, characterized by the distinctive fabric cover that adorns the upper part of the backrest. Measurements: 102 x 43 x 46 cm. This unique chair is part of the Spanish postmodern design movement of the 1980s, characterized by formal experimentation and the reinterpretation of traditional forms. It features a warm-toned wooden frame with slender legs and an elaborate system of curved crossbars that lends dynamism to the overall design. The seat, with its ergonomically shaped surface, contrasts with the high backrest, crowned by an organically shaped piece covered with a black fabric cover featuring a distinct texture. This element introduces striking hallmarks in color and material that accentuate the sculptural character of the design. The piece was conceived by Alfredo Arribas for the Catalan firm Carlos Jané, a manufacturer associated with the renewal of Spanish furniture design during the 1980s. An architect and designer, Arribas was a leading figure in Barcelona’s avant-garde scene, actively working in the fields of architecture, interior design, and furniture design. A professor at the Elisava School, he founded the studio Alfredo Arribas Asociados in 1986 and received various awards, including the 1987 FAD Award for Interior Design for the Network Café project. His body of work reflects the experimental spirit that characterized Spanish design during that decade.
