SVÄNGSTA MATTVÄVERI AB. Sweden, 1970s. Rug or wall hanging from the “Svängsta Slottsmatta” line. Long-pile virgin wool, Gripper-Rya technique, on a cotton warp and jute weft. It retains the manufacturer’s original label on the back. In good condition, with slight signs of wear. Measurements: 226 x 166 cm. This rug is a striking example of 1970s Scandinavian textile design, characterized by experimentation with textures and geometric abstraction. Its composition is centered around a large oval motif with a radial structure, formed by irregular blocks of long pile in shades of pink, coral, orange, and earth tones, which contrast with the brown background of shorter pile. The alternating heights and densities create a pronounced relief effect, accentuating its sculptural character and its versatility as either a rug or a wall hanging. Produced by the Swedish manufacturer Svängsta Mattväveri AB, the piece reflects the renewal of the Nordic tradition of rya rugs during the second half of the 20th century, through the incorporation of abstract designs and mechanized manufacturing techniques. Its rich colors and textural quality reflect the prominent role textiles came to play in the modern interior design of the era.
