SVÄNGSTA MATTVÄVERI AB. Sweden, 1970s. Rug or wall hanging from the “Svängsta Slottsmatta” line. Long-pile virgin wool, Gripper-Rya technique, on a cotton warp and jute weft. It retains the manufacturer’s original label on the back. In good condition, with slight signs of wear. Measurements: 225 x 160 cm. This rug is an attractive example of 1970s Scandinavian textile design, characterized by experimentation with textures and volumes. Its composition features a large oval motif with a geometric structure, formed by irregular modules of long pile in shades of orange, ochre, and gray, which stand out against a background of shorter, mustard-colored pile. The alternating heights and densities create a pronounced relief effect, accentuating its sculptural character and its versatility as either a rug or a wall hanging. Produced by the Swedish manufacturer Svängsta Mattväveri AB, the piece reflects the renewal of the Nordic tradition of rya rugs during the second half of the 20th century, through the incorporation of abstract compositions and an expressive combination of colors and textures. Its design responds to the prominence that large-format textiles gained in the modern interior design of the era.
