FEDERICO CORREA (1924–2020) & ALFONSO MILÁ (1924–2009) for Gres. “Esplugas” armchair. Spain, ca. 1960s. Wooden frame covered in polyurethane and original green velvet upholstery. Condition: Very good condition. Measurements: 77 × 68 × 73 cm. Seat height: 45 cm. “Esplugas” armchair, designed by Federico Correa and Alfonso Milá for Gres. It is characterized by a sober and elegant design language, based on a structure of balanced volumes, a slightly sloped backrest, and rounded arms, which combine comfort and formal rigor. Its design reflects a modern reinterpretation of the traditional armchair, with a strong emphasis on proportions and comfort. Crafted with a polyurethane-coated wooden frame and upholstered in its original green velvet, it features a plush seat, armrests with an enveloping profile, and a lower skirt that conceals the legs, lending visual continuity to the piece. The softness of its forms and the richness of its upholstery are hallmarks of its design, contrasting with the simplicity of its construction and resulting in a piece of timeless character. The Esplugas armchair is a representative example of mid-20th-century modern Spanish design, in which functionality, comfort, and elegance are integrated into a single design. The architectural and design duo Federico Correa and Alfonso Milá, both born in 1924, were among the most prominent figures of the Modern Movement in the second half of the 20th century. Correa and Milá adhered to the principle that interior design and industrial design were integral parts of the same architectural project. As collaborators of José Antonio Coderch, they founded their own studio in 1953. Their body of work ranges from the architecture of summer homes in Cadaqués, institutional and residential buildings, sports stadiums, factories, and offices, to interior design projects for the legendary restaurants FlashFlash and Il Giardinetto, as well as unique and iconic design pieces created to furnish their own buildings and for furniture companies such as Gres.
