Pierre Émile Metzmacher A Lady's Maid before a Mirror Oil on panel. 54.5 x 39.5 cm. Signed and dated lower right: E. Metzmacher 1876. Provenance Formerly Kunsthandlung Boisserée, Cologne (gallery label on the reverse). – Private collection, Rhineland. The artist's dates are often given as 1815 to 1890. This is, however, probably a confusion with his father, the printmaker Pierre Guillaume Metzmacher, who was born in 1815. Pierre Émile studied, among others, under Florent Joseph Marie Willems, who was himself only born in 1823. Metzmacher specialised in depictions of elegant Rococo interiors, often featuring servants and occasionally with a humorous portrayal of everyday life. Thus the lady's maid in the present painting has set aside her feather duster and is instead trying out her mistress's cosmetics with a powder puff.
