Bernhard Peters Winter Landscape Oil on canvas (relined). 70.5 x 112 cm. Signed lower left: B. Peters. 1857. Provenance Private Collection, Berlin. A vast snow-covered mountain landscape with a lake and a rustic wooden hut unfolds beneath a wide turquoise-blue sky. The Mecklenburg landscape painter Bernhard Peters was a regular exhibitor at the Berlin Academy between 1839 and 1848. He studied under the Berlin professor and landscape painter Otto Völckel. Peters later became a teacher himself, among his pupils being the aviation pioneer Otto Lilienthal, who, like Peters, was born in Anklam. In addition to landscapes of his native Mecklenburg, Peters also painted Alpine scenery, as exemplified by the present work, as well as views of Scotland.
