Heinrich Funk Alpine Landscape Oil on canvas. 102.5 x 165 cm. Signed and dated lower left: H. Funk 1866. Provenance Westphalian private collection. - Lempertz, Cologne, 11.5. 2013, lot 1246. – Rhenish private collection. Literature M. Wirsig: Heinrich Funk 1807-1877, Münster 1987, p. 118, no. 18, ill. 92. Heinrich Funk studied at the Düsseldorf Art Academy under J. W. Schirmer and C. F. Lessing from 1830 to 1835. The late Romanticism of the Rhineland, as exemplified by these artists, had a lasting influence on his work. After spending time in Munich, where he also became acquainted with the works of the Rottmann circle, he moved to Frankfurt in 1836. From 1854 to 1876, Funk was professor of landscape painting at the Stuttgart Art School. It was during this period that he produced this large-format painting, dated 1866, which reflects not only the characteristic Schirmer tradition but also his knowledge of Munich's atmospheric painting style.
