Eduard Wilhelm Pose is considered one of the outstanding German landscape painters of the 19th century. ‘He carefully prepared his paintings through numerous studies of nature, but never strove for veduta-like fidelity. Instead, following in the footsteps of Schirmer and Lessing, he sought to create landscape art composed with light effects that was realistic and close to nature, without the intellectual associations of idealism’ (Lexikon der Düsseldorfer Malerschule, Munich 1998, vol. 3, p. 104). A very similar, undated and significantly smaller view of Salzburg is reproduced in the Lexikon der Düsseldorfer Malerschule (op. cit., p. 103, fig. 108).
