Friedrich Nerly A lute player on the Gulf of Sorrento Chalk and brush in grey on ribbed paper, with text in French on the reverse. 42 x 27.5 cm. Monogrammed lower right: FN. f.. Provenance A private collection from the Rhineland. Inscribed at the bottom: Study for a painting of Sorrento for Rothschild. 1833. In 1833/34, Friedrich Nerly painted the picture ‘Grape Harvest in Sorrento’ (oil on paper, 25.1 × 34 cm). It came into the Angermuseum in Erfurt in 1883 from the artist’s estate. This may be a smaller version, or a sketch for a painting of Sorrento that Nelry was commissioned to produce by ‘Rothschild’. An Italian family is making music on a terrace by the coast, with Vesuvius in the background. The central figure is a young man playing the lute, for which our sheet might also have been a study.
