Süddeutscher Meister des 18. Jahrhunderts South German School 18th century Christ at the Column of the Scourging, with the motif of the Fons Vitae (Fountain of Life) Pen and black ink, wash over pencil on blueish paper, heightened in white. 77 x 57.5 cm. Framed under glass. Provenance Private Collection, Rome. The drawing relates to a work by Ignaz Günther in the Detroit Institute of Arts, one of the most prominent sculptors in eighteenth-century Bavaria, who was appointed court sculptor to the Bavarian Electorate. The sculpture was believed to shed real tears: the miraculous piece became the object of a flourishing pilgrimage to the Wieskirche in Bavaria, and was copied in engravings and sculptures. In the present sheet, the Christ is related to the theme of the fons vitae, becoming a source of healing for the pilgrims.
