Flämischer Meister des 17. Jahrhunderts Flemish School 17th century Smoking peasants in a tavern Oil on copper. 37,5 x 30 cm. Provenance Private collection, northern Germany. A similar painting by David Teniers the Younger, which is likely to have served as the model for our painting but which shows some variations, is now in the Museo Nacional Thyssen-Bornemisza in Madrid. Among the differences is a small owl, which in this painting sits on a window shutter in the top left-hand corner but is absent from the Madrid version. Instead, in the Madrid version, a man wearing a red beret is looking through the window from outside into the inn, where our painting depicts a brown earthenware jug.
