David Teniers d. J. François Ryckhals David Teniers the Younger François Ryckhals Interior of a barn featuring animals, a kitchen still life and a farmer with a wheelbarrow filled with vegetables Oil on panel. 54.5 x 70 cm. Certificate Dr. Margret Klinge, Düsseldorf 27.11.1980. Provenance Cardinal Fesch, Rome, estate catalogue 17 March 1844, lot 235. - Wilson Collection, Paris. - His Sale, Drouot, Paris, 27/28 April 1874, lot 28. - Baron Beurnonville Collection, Paris, 1881. - Madame Haas Collection, Paris. - Charles Sedelmeyer, Paris. - His sale, Lepke, Berlin 16 November 1897, Lot 49. - Jacob Hecht, Berlin 29 January 1929, Lot 426. - German private collection. The well-documented provenance of this painting, dating back to the early 19th century, is particularly noteworthy. However, it has always been regarded solely as a work by David Teniers. In her 1980 expert report, however, Margret Klinge describes it – quite convincingly – as a collaborative work by Teniers and the Dutch painter François Ryckhals. The two artists’ styles can indeed be clearly distinguished. Teniers’ hand is evident in the two figures and the dog; the rest of the picture—including the still life with the pile of kitchen utensils and vegetables—consists of motifs characteristic of the Dutch-born artist. In 1640, he had moved to Antwerp for a time and occasionally collaborated with David Teniers there.
