Provenance North German private collection, until 1963. – Lempertz, Cologne, 14–16 November 1963, Lot 126. – Acquired there from the current owner’s father. Isack van Ostade, the younger brother and pupil of Adriaen van Ostade, joined the Guild of St Luke in Haarlem in 1643. His oeuvre mainly consists of rural scenes featuring travellers and peasants outside taverns and farmhouses, bustling country roads, and winter landscapes with sleighs and figures. With a keen eye for detail, Isack van Ostade depicts the everyday life of the Dutch rural population, combining lively figures with atmospherically appealing landscape depictions. Among the characteristic motifs of his work is the grey horse, which also appears prominently in this signed painting.
