Abraham van der Hoef Cavalry Battle Oil on panel. 46.5 x 63.5 cm. Provenance Private collection, Belgium. On the rolling hills, a wild battle rages with hundreds of cavalrymen spreading up into the mountains. In this composition, the Dutch battle painter — aptly named "van der Hoef" — contrasts a black horse riding away in the right foreground with a rearing white horse in the left middle ground. A comparable depiction in terms of motifs, composition, and execution quality can be found in the Rijksmuseum, Amsterdam (inv. no. SK-A-1753).
