Flämischer Meister des 16. Jahrhunderts Flemish School 16th century Maria Lactans Oil on panel. 40,5 x 38 cm. Provenance Lempertz, Cologne, 18.11.1965, Lot 20 (as Cornelis van Cleve). – Quittenbaum Kunstauktionen, Munich, 20.3.2024 (as Circle of Joos van Cleve). – Private Collection, Saxony. This intimate Flemish depiction of a Maria Lactans dresses the Virgin in a fashionable, fur-trimmed gown in dark blue and magenta. With hands as large as they are elegant, she holds the delicate feet of the Christ Child, who nestles against her breast and gazes at the viewer. The painting is a variant, by a 16th-century Flemish follower, on related depictions by the so-called "Master of the Parrot" (cf. lot 1014 in the present catalogue), who was active with his workshop in Antwerp c. 1520-30.
