Andreas Theodor Mattenheimer Two still lifes with fruit and flowers60 x 48,5 cm Oil on canvas (edges relined). 40 x 68.5 cm each. One painting signed and dated lower left: ATMattenheimer fait 1811. Provenance Senger Art Gallery, Bamberg. – Acquired there and since then in a private German collection. Andreas Theodor Mattenheimer the Younger gained international recognition as a painter of meticulously detailed fruit and flower still lifes in the tradition of the Old Masters. The reason for this becomes strikingly clear when viewing the pair of still lifes on offer here: with great virtuosity, the artist captures the different materials and surfaces – from the cool hardness of the stone, through the fine texture of the fabrics, to the sensuous ripeness of the fruit and the delicate splendour of the blossoms – and presents them in a masterfully composed arrangement.
