Johann Nepomuk Schödlberger A classical landscape with water, a bridge and figures Oil on canvas. 74.5 x 104 cm. Signed lower right: JNSchödlberger. Provenance Senger Art Gallery, Bamberg. – Acquired there in the 1990s and has been in a private German collection ever since. After completing his training at the Vienna Academy, Johann Nepomuk Schödlberger travelled to Italy in 1817 and spent a year in Rome. Schödlberger was even more interested in the classical paintings of Claude Lorrain and Nicolas Poussin than in the group known as the ‘Deutschrömer’. This is also evident in this representative painting, which offers a modern, contemporary interpretation of the French classical artists.
