Sassanid seal. Iran, ca. 224–651 CE. Made of chalcedony, with a transverse puncture for suspension. Condition: Shows minor concretions and signs of wear consistent with its age. Provenance: Family bequest of Ramon Martí Alsina and Ricard Martí Aguiló. An archaeological collection assembled beginning in the 1950s by successive generations of the family through acquisitions at European galleries and auction houses. Seals were a common feature of the material culture of the Sassanid Empire, used in both administrative and private contexts. They were frequently carved from hard and semiprecious stones, and many examples feature punctures that allowed them to be worn as pendants or attached to other personal items. Chalcedony was one of the materials used by Sassanid artisans due to its hardness and suitability for carving.
