Amulet of the god Bes; Egypt, Late Period, 664–323 B.C. Faience. Measurements: 14 x 7 mm. Provenance: Family legacy of Ramon Martí Alsina and Ricard Martí Aguiló. Archaeological collection formed from the 1950s by successive generations of the family, through acquisitions in European galleries and auction houses. Egyptian faience amulet in the shape of the god Bes, an ancient Egyptian deity worshiped as the protector of the home and, more specifically, of mothers, children, and childbirth. Art depicts him as a dwarf-like, bearded figure with long hair, often sticking out his tongue. He usually appears naked or clad in a lion’s skin, and may be depicted with a large erect phallus, due to his association with love and sexual pleasure.
